William Barrett was the oldest son of Southampton photographer Herbert Barrett. At the beginning of 1891, when the census was taken, William was living with his parents and siblings at 11 Prospect Place. No occupation was given for William or his brothers and sisters who were all in their late teens or early twenties. Later in 1891 William married Annie Guster. In the same year the photography studio of W.R Vandyke was first listed at 43 East Street.

The 1901 and 1911 census records revealed that 43 East Street was the studio and home of photographer William Barrett and his wife Annie. William Barrett advertised and took portraits as W.R Vandyke until about 1918. In 1915 the studio was listed as Vandyke and Barrett. After 1918 William Rendell Barrett worked in his own name at 43 East Street, until most of the Street was destroyed in WW2. William Barrett died in Southampton in 1944.
