Stephen Alfred Chandler was one of the later Southampton photographers included on this site. However, his career began within the Victorian period. He was born in Richmond in 1874, and was recorded as a photographer's assistant, aged 16, in 1891.
By 1903 Chandler married, moved to Exeter, and opened his own photography shop in an arcade. The family moved to Southampton after 1907. The 1910 Southampton Street Directory recorded S.A. Chandler and Co at 132 Above Bar, the former premises of Freeman and Co. Chandler also ran a studio in Boscombe, which carried out commercial work, for example photographs for advertising. The family moved back to Devon after 1911.
Chandler and Co traded at 132 Above Bar until the late 1920s when the firm moved to 11 Commercial Road. Chandler died in Topsham, Devon, in 1943. Chandler and Co continued to trade in Southampton until the mid 1950s.
