James Owen worked from studios in Bournemouth, Salisbury and Southampton. Owen lived in Salisbury for most of his life, and the Southampton studio at 29 High Street was open from 1888 to about 1893. Owen was born in Paddington, London, and his wife was born in Southampton. They married in the late 1870s, and as Owen advertised his role as Principal Photographer for Adams and Stilliard on the back of his carte de visite portraits, he probably worked for them around the time of his marriage, before settling in Salisbury.
