James Owen worked from studios in Bournemouth, Salisbury and Southampton. Owen lived in Salisbury for most of his life, and the Southampton studio at 29 High Street was open from 1888 to about 1893. Owen was born in Paddington, London, and his wife was born in Southampton. They married in the late 1870s, and as Owen advertised his connection with Adams and Stilliard on the back of his carte de visites, he probably worked for them around the time of his marriage, before settling in Salisbury.

In 1894 29 High St became the studio of the Globe Photographic Company, run by photographer George Augustus Ashbolt.
