The profiles have been put together by studying a range of sources including census records, and birth, marriage and death records.
The main sources for this site are the carte de visite and cabinet card portraits themselves, all of which are from a private collection. Additional images of advertisements and trade listings are provided courtesy of Southampton Central Library.
Further information was found in Southampton Directories and nineteenth century Southampton Guide Books held in Southampton Central Library Reference Section, (With thanks to the librarians for their assistance).
Information on the earliest Southampton Photographers was found in Isle of Wight Photographers 1840 – 1940 by Raymond V. Turley. Additional material was gratefully received from David Simkin, author of the Sussex Photo History website.
